Tasting profile

Murray McDavid Whisky Profile

History

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright. The company quickly became known as an adventurous independent bottler, with a particular reputation for creative cask maturation and finishing.

After the founders became involved with Bruichladdich, Murray McDavid was closely linked with some of the more progressive thinking in modern Scotch whisky. Today the brand continues to focus on independent bottlings, unusual casks and whisky that gives a tasting room something to argue cheerfully about.

Whisky Style

Murray McDavid bottlings are usually about cask character, individuality and careful finishing. Expect a line-up that can move from fruity Speyside and Highland styles through to coastal, sherried, wine-finished, rum-finished or peated drams.

The style is less about one house flavour and more about how the chosen cask shapes the spirit. That makes it ideal for a club tasting because every bottle should have its own story and, ideally, at least one member confidently claiming they detected “old bookshop and pineapple”.

Notable Bottlings

  • Benchmark Series
  • Mission Gold Series
  • Mystery Malt Series
  • Cask Craft Series
  • Select Grain Collection
  • Single cask and small batch releases from well-known and lesser-spotted Scottish distilleries.

Club Notes

Why It Matters Murray McDavid gives the club a chance to taste casks outside the usual distillery core ranges, which normally means more variation, more debate, and a better chance of finding something memorable.
Club Connection This tasting is built around a Murray McDavid line-up at the Palace Hotel, Peterhead, with the usual Glenugie Whisky Club mix of proper whisky chat and friendly nonsense.
Members’ Favourites Members’ favourites will be added after the tasting.
Member View Member notes will be added after the Murray McDavid tasting. Expect the usual mix of sensible tasting comments, bold opinions and at least one remark that makes no sense after the third dram.
