Tasting profile

Rare Finds Whisky Profile

History

Rare Find is an independent bottling range from Gleann Mór Spirits, based in Edinburgh. The idea is simple: source interesting casks from sought-after Scottish distilleries, then bottle them as limited single cask or small batch releases when the liquid is ready rather than when a marketing calendar says so.

The Rare Find name fits the job. These bottlings are not standard distillery core-range releases. They are selected casks, often at natural strength, showing a particular side of a distillery, cask type, finish, or age profile. In plain English: bottles you do not normally trip over in Tesco on a Tuesday.

Whisky Style

Rare Find bottlings are usually about cask character, individuality and limited availability. Expect higher strength releases, clear cask influence, and a line-up that can move from fruity Speyside and Highland styles through to coastal, sherried, wine-finished, rum-finished or peated drams.

The style is less about one house flavour and more about careful cask selection. That makes it ideal for a club tasting because every bottle should have its own story and, ideally, at least one member confidently claiming they detected “old bookshop and pineapple”.

Notable Bottlings

  • Single cask Scotch whisky releases from selected Scottish distilleries.
  • Small batch and limited-edition releases under the Rare Find label.
  • Older and unusual casks, including rare age statements and distinctive finishes.
  • Recent library releases have included names such as Caol Ila, Dailuaine, Glen Ord, Craigellachie, Glenglassaugh, Braeval and Tomatin.

Club Notes

Why It Matters Rare Find gives the club a chance to taste casks outside the usual distillery core ranges, which normally means more variation, more debate, and a better chance of finding something memorable.
Club Connection This tasting is built around a Rare Finds line-up at the Palace Hotel, Peterhead, with the usual Glenugie Whisky Club mix of proper whisky chat and friendly nonsense.
Members’ Favourites The top two bottles were the Bonus Dram - Speyside 22 YO (2003)(Teaspooner) and the Islay Medium Peated 11 YO
Member View Kevin - I had a very enjoyable Rare Find Whisky tasting experience at The Palace Hotel, Peterhead with Charlie the Rare Find Whisky Ambassador for the Eastern side of Scotland. We had an excellent evening of exquisite drams all of which were very well presented by Charlie who was an extremely knowledgeable host. He explained where each dram had been distilled and what the cask maturation process had entailed. The drams were most enjoyable the company was good and the discussions and whisky craic was legendary. I will certainly be in attendance for more of the same.
